A Word On Food…
We’ve gone over several workouts, but one important factor in your new weight loss and fitness journey is actually the most important factor: food! So from us to you, here is some food for thought… or thoughts on food.
This one may surprise you a little, but the fact is that many of us simply are not eating enough – we’re just eating too much of the wrong foods. In a perfect world, eating 5-6 small meals a day is ideal: breakfast, a mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and possibly an after-dinner snack. If you still think we’re crazy, there’s a key in what and how to manage these meals.
“Eat Breakfast Like a King, Dinner Like a Peasant”
Ever hear of this saying? Basically, make breakfast your biggest meal, and gradually make your meals smaller throughout the day, ending with dinner. Make sure to include fruit, carbohydrates, and protein in breakfast. Eat
carbohydrates early on in the day, including in your mid-morning snack and lunch; whatever you’ve heard about carbs, you DO need them in your diet. Carbs are energy. The misconception is that most people aren’t eating the right carbs; you have good carbs and bad carbs. White bread, for example, is a bad carb. An apple is a good carb.
Don’t Go For Seconds!
Okay, this may sound like we’re contradicting ourselves since we just told you to eat more. But the key is to do everything in moderation. Eating 5-6 SMALL meals a day will keep your metabolism going, which is the goal in losing weight.
With all of this being said, everyone’s body is different. The best way to know what kind of meal plan works for you would be to consult with a nutritionist. He or she can work with you to figure out your BMI (body mas index), what your goals are, and essentially tell you exactly what and how much you need to be eating every day.
But, until then, remember the key factors in getting started:
- Eat 5-6 small meals a day
- Eat your biggest meal for breakfast
- Carbs in the beginning of the day
- Eat in moderation – no seconds!
