Treadmills are a great way to stay in shape and get a cardio workout. To get the most out of your investment, it’s important to know all the functions of your treadmill before your workout.
General features on many common treadmills include:
- Buttons on the console to adjust speed & incline.
- Setting up your user profile with height, weight & other data
- Heart rate monitoring
- Any safety features such as an emergency shut off mechanism
- Folding mechanism
For demonstration purposes I’’ll describe features and use pictures of the Yowza Sebring folding treadmill in this article. Most of the functions described will be applicable to all treadmills though.
Most treadmills allow the user to input their height, weight, age and possibly other factors. These user profiles also allow the user to store their custom made workout programs.
After filling out the user profile, you can either start running or you select one of the workout programs. Common examples of treadmill workout programs include target time, target distance and target calories.

Heart Rate Monitoring
Treadmills like the Sebring are also compatible with polar heart rate transmitters. This allows for heart rate based programs, which will adjust speed and incline to keep the user at a desired heart rate.
Manual adjustment of treadmill speed and incline allows you to override the program, during your workout. Most treadmills allow the user to adjust speed and incline using buttons on the treadmill console. Others have a mechanism on the handlebars to adjust them as well.
To avoid injury during your workout it’s important to take advantage of the safety features offered by your treadmill. For example, on the Sebring, there is a clip that you can attach to your shirt that will automatically shut the treadmill belt down when pulled from the console.
The patented Transformer folding mechanism has two advantages over every other folding treadmill design. By not having a rigid sub frame it looks and feels more like a conventional running non-folding treadmill while in use. In addition, when folded it takes up a fraction of the space versus a conventional folding treadmill.
